The Autumn Equinox is upon us, signalling the start of the season of letting go. Change is inevitable as life moves from one phase to another. Like it or not, soon enough, that extra layer of clothing will come out of the wardrobe. Sure, you could cling to your summer look, even as the biting wind turns your nipples into coat hooks—but that would only lead to unnecessary suffering, wouldn’t it? (Bear with me; I’m about to say something profound...)
Equinoxes and solstices mark moments in our calendar that remind us of life's constant ebb and flow. Depending on where we are in our personal cycles, it could be a time for rest and renewal, taking action, harvesting, or letting go. As a metaphor, the seasons beautifully illustrate how, when we transition through life's stages in a healthy way, we maintain a natural flow that enriches our story of struggle, growth, pain, and joy. The key is to embrace the momentum. All things must pass, and change is inevitable (told you it was worth waiting for!).
However, unlike the ever-turning wheel of the year, we humans have a choice when transitions call. You can ignore or resist, staying stuck in place—or you can choose to answer the call to adventure. The call to experience your life at deeper levels, explore your potential, embrace your sense of adventure, and live meaningfully.
Autumn represents the stage in any cycle where it’s time to assess, let go, and move on. It’s a time to recognise your patterns and what holds you back so you can let go of the stories that no longer serve you. The pitfall at this stage is becoming too focused on past traumas, staying stuck in the narrative and embedding it deeper into the subconscious through repetition.
This often happens when the foundation of your well-being is vulnerable or even non-existent. If you’ve faced many traumas, disappointments, and challenges in life, much like the shock absorber in a car, your foundation has taken the blows. You may also have developed the habit of repeating the same story, making the same choices, and reinforcing an identity that limits your potential. Life’s fast pace and stress can leave you operating on autopilot for longer than is useful. If your foundation isn’t sound, it leaves you vulnerable, and without nurturing, it can deteriorate.
The good news is that no matter the state of your foundation, it can always improve. The first step towards well-being is finding peace. Even if you can only hold peace for a few moments—taking a few deep breaths, feeling the breeze on your skin, or listening to birdsong—each practice helps carve a pathway that makes it easier to return to peace when needed. Peace opens the door to choice, and from there, you can gently direct your focus toward joy. Joy is the most powerful healing force in your body. When joy is active, it engages your radiant circuits, a powerful energy source that makes you stronger, healthier, and more resilient. Your radiant circuits can help you move on without denying or suppressing your story. However painful, your story will always be a part of you and there is potential to turn that story into one that strengthens you.
Life has a natural tendency to transition and evolve. This call for change will come whether you are listening out for it or not; the key is to respond with a resounding yes. With the right foundation and support, uncomfortable emotions—fear, shame, guilt, sadness, frustration, insecurity—can guide you toward a more peaceful, fulfilling existence. If we approach the autumn stage of any cycle prepared and resilient, we can let go and move closer to our natural state—joyful, generous, kind, and compassionate. This state is what the world needs now more than ever to shift collective consciousness.
